Teacher Interviews-

Teacher 1- Mr. Smyth

Interviewer: What do you think about the diversity of cultures here and does it amaze you?

Interviewee: Ah its great… I’ve never been somewhere where there’s so many different cultures, ethnic backgrounds, different nationalities represented, because I used to work in England, and we’d be lucky if we had people from 3 different countries in our hometown so it’s impressive.

Interviewer: And what do you think makes international day important in school?

Interviewee: Uh, it’s a very beneficial thing for us to really realize how many different countries we actually have and that’s here in WSO, and how actually everyone here is from different backgrounds, y’know it’s only a little thing to show a little bit of different food, but it just shows oh actually well our whole culture and our whole way of living is different.

Teacher 2 – Mrs. Saebnoori

Interviewer: What do you think about the diversity of cultures here and does it amaze you?

Interviewee: It does, it makes me every year, the different cultures and the fact that we have over 100 different nationalities is just something so amazing we have here at WSO.

Interviewer: And what do you think makes international day important in school?

Interviewee: It’s great to celebrate diversity and we will come together as one family and that’s why I think it’s great to celebrate what makes us different so yeah that’s the main reason… The food, well the food is the best thing.

Interviewer: How did you like the performances?

Interviewee: The performances were pretty good as well, yeah really really good.

Interviewer: Did you learn something new about any culture, if so what did you learn?

Interviewee: No not really, because I had to monitor students and make sure they were well behaved, but the best thing was the parents, the parents have spent  days and days preparing for this event so it was really cool, so just make sure your thankful towards them.

Teacher 3 – Mrs. Donaldson

Interviewer: What do you think about the diversity of cultures here and does it amaze you?

Interviewee: Absolutely amazes me and every year every more so, more countries getting involved till this day.

Interviewer: And what do you think makes international day important in school?

Interviewee: The WSO community coming together so students, parents and staff all get involved in every single one of them.

Interviewer: How were the performances?

Interviewee: Amazing, I have not got the chance to see them all but again, what variety and equality.

Teacher 4 and 5 – Mr. James and Mr. Mulgrew

Interviewer: What do you think about the diversity of cultures here and does it amaze you?

Interviewee: Well I think if you see around us today, I think it’s a really good thing and I was just talking to another teacher about how really nice it is to see how proud people are of their heritage.

Interviewee 2: It gives everybody a nice excuse to show off their food show off their culture and you know its where you can share and connect with people.

Interviewer: And what do you think makes international day important in school?

Interviewee: I think it’s kind off similar to what I’ve said, it’s a chance for everybody to demonstrate what they’re proud off, demonstrate where they are from  and also for other people to realize we’re in a different world.

Interviewee 2: One of the major benefits I think of Dubai is so many different cultures and everybody is culturally aware of it, everyone is sort of aware that it bridges any, y’know tensions or anything like that, and it’s just what’s really good about this place.

Interviewer: How were the performances?

Interviewee: I haven’t got the chance to see any yet and I’m hoping to go after this to see some.

Interviewee: Same as well.

Interviewer: Did you learn something new about any culture, if so what did you learn?

Interviewee: Uh maybe not about culture, but I’ve learnt something about myself, ah I’m not very good with hot foods and a lot of new experiences as well.

Interviewee 2: I haven’t learnt much as well.

Teacher 6 and 7 – Ms. Stanley and Ms. Aschettino

Interviewer: What do you think about the diversity of cultures here and does it amaze you?

Interviewee: I think the diversity of cultures here is amazing and this year we’ve got more country stalls than we’ve ever had so it’s brilliant to see all the different countries getting involved, the students hopefully having their cultures represented and that they’re really proud of their culture and that really represents the school community and the diversity is one of our biggest strengths in school so yeah,

Interviewee 2: I think it’s really great to see actually, I was actually managing the exits earlier on and it was really great to see students that walked past with their plates and it looked like it had something from every single country, so it’s good to see that students are embracing it by trying everything.

Interviewer: And what do you think makes international day important in school?

Interviewee: Well what’s important is, just what we’ve talked about, the fact that we’ve got I think we’ve got 113 nationalities in school now in terms of the student body so the fact that students can celebrate each other’s cultures and learn about each other’s cultures  and that confirmation and tolerance and culture and empathy and the fact that everybody should be proud of their groups and where they come from that’s usually important so international day is a very big part of that, it’s one of the days where different nationalities  really showcase what’s positive about their own culture.

Interviewee 2: Yeah I totally agree, and also an opportunity for students and teachers to celebrate all together so not only bringing together the different countries, the different nationalities but to also bring the different people that make up the community of the school.

Interviewer: How did you like the performances?

Interviewee 2: Oh, I’m going to see it now.

Interviewee: I have seen them, they are brilliant again it’s that representation isn’t it, and it’s great to see adults from the community coming and performing but to also getting students from different ages performing, and so it’s just all about that cultural empathy and I think being proud of your culture because I think sometimes, especially if you’re kind off in a minority culture, sometimes you feel like you’re a bit tied to that cultural background and it actually stays that nobody should feel like that and that every culture is like that individually, and it’s that kind of individuality that should be celebrated along with the commonalities.

Interviewer: Did you learn something new about any culture, if so what did you learn?

Interviewee: I learnt that Russia has the world’s biggest McDonalds apparently, that’s my biggest fact that I learnt from Russian, I think that one of the main highlights has to definitely be the food, yeah it’s just learning about… I mean the food is a really important element to culture and it’s something clearly that parents put so much work in and put loads of work into today and feel really proud about because if you look at every stand they’ve all got cuisine in there and that’s something they obviously feel passionate about in terms of representing their own culture.

Interviewee 2: I think it’s really great to see actually, I was actually managing the exits earlier on and it was really great to see students that walked past with their plates and it looked like it had something from every single country, so it’s good to see that students are embracing it by trying everything.
