This year’s International Day was a grand as ever with over 34 countries represented through food and even more through the various activities that were on show for all students to join in. Students across WSO thoroughly enjoyed the day and a lot could be taken away from the day – not to mention a lot of food in people’s stomachs!
International Day is a celebration of the worlds cultures and what unites us yet what sets us apart from one another. WSO is a school made up of over 4000 students across 100+ countries and it is important to recognise each of our backgrounds and what makes us who we are. Through the global adoration of food, we can celebrate our diversity and enjoy each other’s company. This is in conjunction with the UAE’s and especially Dubai’s effort to reduce cultural indifferences that exist.
The event took place in secondary with groups of students coming in and out of the food stalls and performance area throughout the day. Food from nations including the UK, Netherlands, Pakistan, Syria, Iran and the United States were all available for students to indulge in and demand was so popular for some stalls that they had run out before 1:00 in the afternoon! Some favourites that students kept going back to were the Dutch waffles from the Netherlands, Biryani from Pakistan, Brownies from USA and the Scottish tablet over at the UK. There was also a falcon for students to hold at the Germany stall.
Also running alongside the food stalls was the performances that took place in the foremost netball court. Students and teachers were treated to an array of performances, arranged by our very own parent groups, originating from many eastern countries and also from some local groups. Highlights were a group of young gymnasts, the traditional Yowla dance, a tremendous display of talent by Callum Brenner, a senior student in year 13 and also a performance by some of WSO’s primary Ta’s along to a mixture of Bollywood songs. All year groups of school got to see these performance and they were both truly thrilling and amusing to watch.
International Day 2020 at WSO is always a thrill to be a part of and each year, the parent teams and councils take huge pride in delivering such a memorable experience and it always pays off. Every year the event becomes more and more spectacular and harder and harder to top, but this student favourite is here to stay for a lot longer and it will keep delivering every time it is hosted.
